What is this bracket for?

Recently noticed this bracket on driver side and middle of frame. Not sure why coating is broke and if bolts fell out?

I just looked at my 2017 350 and the holes are not used but, my 60 gallon TransFlo tank mounts on the back side up on the frame. Looks like a handy/sturdy place to mount something on. Hmmm

Was there any work done to your truck related to the fuel tank? Mine looks the same way and now I can't remember if there were bolts in there or not. Sucks getting old......

My vote is air horns. I believe they all have them, without any bolts.

I think maybe the fuel tank skidplate uses that bracket? Can't recall 100% right now.

Nope, I have the skid plate and that bracket is not used. I have often wondered myself what the bracket is for. I hope someone comes up with a reasonable explanation. It would be a good conversation starter between super duty dudes....

I have the skid plates and that bracket doesn't appear to be used for skid plate mounting. I wonder what it's for..... and my response was just a little late to the party.

I did have the dealer perform the gas tank upgrade to use more of the stated 34 gallons.

IIRC, that's purely there to protect the fuel tank from a side impact. Kind of like the Prius catchers. I know I've read that before...

I am not sure it was response to a TSB for fuel capacity less than advertised.

I searched the parts diagrams to see if Ford calls out that specific part but I can't find it. One of the frame diagrams looks like it might have that part included in (as part of the frame) it but without it being defined as a distinct part.

My friend has it on his F250 short bed gasser. The bolt holes are unused. My long bed doesn’t have it.
