2004 Excursion downshifted at high speed.

Hello,
Wanted to ask if anyone has heard of this happening with an excursion, or had this experience. I have an 2004 with 6.0 diesel, we use to travel to shows, 230 thousand miles on it. Today, while returning from a show on the Pa. Turnpike, it suddenly downshifted at 70 plus mph, almost caused an accident. My sales manager called and told me he had a few seconds warning, when the tow light started to flash on the dash, and WHAM. He was not towing anything.

I see where Ford is having issues with transmissions doing this in newer trucks.

We had it flat bedded to a local ford dealer, guess they will look at it tomorrow and let me know what is going on.

Thanks for any input.

Had a similar situation with an old beater car a few years ago, a 98 Contour with CD4e. It would randomly downshift from 4th to 2nd at any speed. Made for some pretty rough downshifts... In that case, it was a failing TR sensor that was misreporting the shift lever position to the computer. I know that how the systems are implemented is very different between that car and your truck, but the concept still applies as a possibility.

The "tow light" performs double duty as it is also the fault indicator for transmission concerns (when it flashes). Since it flashed, the computer should have fault codes stored that the dealer tech can pull for more diagnostic information.
