I am trying to decode the VIN# on my 78 F350 Custom. The 4th digit is suppose to be the engine size. The digit is a "S" which says it came with a 400 2 bc. However, the motor in the truck is much lager than a 400 and it has a 4160 Holley 4bc. Where else can I find the size of this engine? I am trying to fix this truck up for my son and I am stuck. Thanks in advance.
Welcome to FTE, regardless what the vi# code says a different (none OEM engine) could of been swapped in.
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow. The 351M and 400 are identical externally, only internal parts examination can tell them apart.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
A pic around here will get you a lot more answers.

Where is the VIN, on the title/registration? Stamped on the Warranty Plate-riveted to the left door face below the latch? On the Certification Label, glued to the B pillar (door post) below the striker plate?
If all these VIN's match, the engine was swapped, because: 1977/79 F100/350 & 1978/79 Bronco: S = 400 2V
The 400 and 460 have very similar deck heights, making them nearly equivalent in width. As a result many, many people have mistaken the 400 or 351M for a 460. When I was looking for my truck I ran into a couple of those.
A second or third owner who is not a car guy can easily make mistakes on engine ID.
I've got an Edelbrock Performer 400 on my 400 with a 600 Holley sitting on top.
On the other hand, if you really do have a 400 pickup with a 460 swapped in, I think you got a good deal.
