460 piston question

would a 460 with a D9TE-AB block have flat-top or dished pistons? trying to figure out how much i want to do to this motor. I don't want to do a stroker kit cause i'm somewhat of a purist and in my opinion once you stroke a 460, its not a 460 anymore and i really don't like that.

No one would care. What kind of engine are you trying to build?

If you are rebuilding a stocker, used OEM parts.

If you are trying to improve the platform for more power, you can't let that idea stand in the way. It's still a 460 based engine, and no one cares about what you did to it.

More 460 from the "All 460 all the time" site:

i want as much power i can get while still being able to run pump gas. would this be feasable if i ran some SCJ heads, a cam, a pre-71 timing kit, a high-rise intake, some long tube hedders and holley 750? i need to be able to run pump gas because this will be my daily driver/show truck.

You need to figure out your compression ratio with those heads, and tune the ignition curve to that combination. Look at the cook book I posted for some info.

Post 1 here seems to have stock piston specs.

the biggest problem with that though is that this came out of a truck with VERY screwed up wiring and i have NEVER heard the engine run, so pretty much all i know about it is that it cranks over. I have it on a stand right now just sitting in the corner of the shop waiting for spring so i can build it

In my experience with 460s the one area that needs addressed is quinch. If I recall the pistons sit almost 1/8 inch in bore at TDC, maybe more.

Flat tops, zero decked and oem heads will still be pump gas friendly and substantial improvements will be had.

Heads can be reworked to flow almost as much as scj heads. Just build it for what it's to be used for. If you want torque than oem heads are fine, but more compression is a plus. Horsepower builds need more air at peak rpm so valve train and cam needs addressed.
