4R100 Transmission Issues (codes P0732 and P0781)

Hello all,

I started to experiencing shifting issues a few days ago, it was either hard shifting into 2 or 3 or not shifting into reverse or 2/3 at all. I changed the fluid and filter as a first step (fluid was clean as it was changed not long ago) and pulled DTCs P0732 and P0781 from the truck. The issue seems to get worse when the transmission is warm. With a cold transmission, it shifts pretty good.

Today I went out and ran some diagnostics and found I was getting electrical faults on shift solenoid #1 and shift solenoid #2.

I'm wondering if I can fix this issue by picking up a new Transmission Control Solenoid. Sorry if I'm way off, I don't know much about transmissions.

Those codes show that there is a problem with second gear, which is the intermediate clutch.

You don't have codes for electrical faults. I don't think a new solenoid body is going to help, I think you have a problem with the intermediate clutch. That's going to take a rebuild to fix.

Thank you, Mark!

Just so I understand the issue better. In the screenshot I attached to my first post, it showed the SS1 and SS2 electrical faults. Are you saying those faults can be caused by a clutch? Also, if the solenoids were an issue, I’d have a DTC for it?

I don't know what those screens are showing, nor where they are getting their data. If there were an electrical fault it should set a code for an electrical problem. The codes for electrical faults are the most reliable tests that the PCM has.

And if there really is an electrical problem, chances are it's the wiring, not the solenoids.

Thanks, Mark! I found a local guy that rebuilds truck transmissions and has done a lot of 4r100's. I started pulling my transmission today and plan on putting in a rebuilt transmission next week.
