That's a typical price for a bed for one of these trucks here in Pa. And I've seen just the bed go for as high as $2k.

Ah, the correct terminology! I should know this since my 73 XLT has this.

I've seen the lower finishing panel sell for $200.

If this was in my area I'd consider it, but I'd much rather find one close that is rust free or maybe a donor with a nice bed that I can get a few other things from.

Both the upper and lower finish panels are repro'd by Carpenter.

Yep, but together both pieces will run about $450, so if you can get them in good shape for a low price OEM, why not?

That's what I'm saying about a bed like this... to me the tailgate and finishing panels are worth quite a bit, let alone the bed itself. If only one of these short beds would pop up in Florida. The hunt continues.

Calling this a 73-79 truck bed is a bit misleading. The fuel fillers on the driver side were different (1973-76) vs (1977-79). This would be an important data point for a restorer. That plus the poor images and the price tag would put me off unless I could eyeball it up close and in-person.
There are several case studies on this and other truck oriented sites on the subject of turning a LWB bed to a SWB bed by cutting/welding. Then, too, any bed up to '96 will work and those can be re-skinned with dent side panels.
