I've done it many times. black is the easiest and turns out the best. if they're half decent you'll be happy with the results.
Wash them really good in tide or some detergent. put the dye in hot water and let them soak a while. dump it out and rinse them in cold water until it comes off clear. lay them out on towels and let them dry for a day or so. worked or me every time.
I cleaned mine with dish soap, air dried, then taped off and used fabric paint. They turned out very well. I was afraid it would be stiff but it’s not at all.
