Trading in when ordering

My trade is the last discussion I need to have with my dealer. One gave me a quote, lower then expected, the one I'm going to buy from wouldn't.
I get that my trade will be worth a little less in 2 months but it shouldn't be a lot.
if you've traded a vehicle when ordering did you get an initial offer? Did it go down a lot at delivery?

I negotiated a trade-in that was higher than the trade in book values on KBB for a super clean 8 year old Tahoe with only 45K miles. The dealer then said he may not be able to give me the same price when my truck came in if the book value was lower or I added more miles. I suspected they would try to give me a lower price when my truck came in knowing I wanted it and would be excited to take delivery at that time. I offered to sell my trade to them on the spot and they accepted. I did have another vehicle to drive while my truck was on order. They sold my trade in less than a week.

If you sell your trade in to dealer prior to your ordered truck arriving you may not be eligible for a tax break from your trade. That might not make a difference if they give you more than you are expecting. That’s rare because they have to make money but it could happen.

For what it's worth I negociated a trade-in on my 2013 for a in-stock 2019. I pondered it for 6 weeks then finally bit after Ford offered up a VIN-Specific rebate They still honored our deal. You could always walk if the deal turns sour.

My dealer offered a trade value on my 2014 F150 when I ordered my truck in the beginning of October 2016, it arrived December 31st 2016. My f150 has an additional 6,000 miles on it when I picked up my new truck, I still got the same trade value offered when I ordered.

Taxes in Virginia are for the gross selling price of the new vehicle and do not include (lowered) due to any trade-in. Other states may differ.

If you have the luxury of multiple vehicles, consider selling outright. If your private party sale nets you more than the trade offer (and the sales tax differential), you will come out ahead. Also, you may be able to negotiate a better purchase price without a trade. Over the past 30 years or so, and dozens of vehicle purchases, I have NEVER had a trade - FWIW
Yeah, I get it...It's not as convenient, but, can be financially rewarding.

Hows that? The actual sales would take place on arrival of the new truck, not now.

When I ordered my 2017 F250, there was no price/discount haggling because the dealer quoted a price 11% below MSRP which was acceptable to me. My dealer would not quote on my 72K-mile 2010 F150 FX4 trade-in value until delivery. At delivery, they offered $3K less than average KBB value for the F150. I politely asked them to hand me the F150 keys, told them to keep the F250 and to snail-mail my deposit to my home address. I then got up and started walking out. When they realized I was serious, they gave me what I wanted for the F150. That F150 sold within a week for $4K more than trade-in ... which is OK because I expect dealers to make a profit (their sole purpose of being in business).

Yeah, thats the only play you have. Kudos to you for getting it done.
Another dealer offered me right at KBB value for it, so i have an idea of what they should offer. Though I think its a little low.

if you go along the lines of what thumbs up said... I was simply responding because he stated he sold his truck to the dealer prior to his ordered truck being delivered. I was informing the original poster.

I traded a 2011 F150. I was told that as long as I didn't break 100k before trading they would hold my price. I had 94k at time and traded with about 96k. Got same offer.

Sold my 99 to a friend after I ordered my 07. The dealer let me run the sale, to my friend, thru them to count as a trade in. They charged 100 bucks for this but it was the best of both worlds.
