Replacing COP electrical connector (without cutting or splicing)
After performing an unplug test to try and catch misfires, I discovered those pesky little coil electrical connector's tend to break. More specifically, the locking tabs. I broke two being as light-handed as anyone can be. After a while they get so brittle they just give way with little effort. It's here that you find yourself using zip-ties or worse, electrical tape.
First thing I did was head out to my local salvage yard:
These cost me a couple bucks for the lot. I just took my Leatherman and snipped away at a poor old Triton in the warehouse. I bought more than you see above to be safe.
Then, all you have to do is VERY CAREFULLY lever up this little red locking tab. Just be real careful, these are prone to break too.
One it's up and released, just use a pin or a tiny jeweller's flat head screwdriver to slide behind the connector and push down with a little force to release the inner tab on each side:
Pulling on the plastic connector, you'll see the two wires slide easily out of the bottom:
Repeat these steps in the engine bay, pushing the wires into the new connector, and you'll be good to go. Just remember which way around the wires go before you disconnect. In fact, best of taking a picture before you do it!
