So this may be a common thread but I'm looking to convert my 77 over to a later serpentine system. Reasons for this include:
getting more than a 60 amp alternator
ditching the stock steel fan
possibly getting an a/c compressor (I live in the swampland of SC)
possibly gaining a little mileage
I've been checking craigslist/eBay and I find some engines that I think I can buy just to get the accessories and brackets but what specifically should I be looking for? Will just any old 87 and later i6 have what I want? Vin codes that mean serpentine? Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance .
To answer this question, it is pretty important to know what engine you have. You mention I6- does that mean you have a 300? If so, the serpentine system is found on any fuel injected 300 (or 4.9L as they are called in the FI models) and is not a direct bolt on, but close. I am working on this mod for my wife's truck. The newer FI heads have a boss about a foot from the front of the engine that the earlier carbureted heads lack. It is needed where the serpentine PS/ AC bracket has a brace bolts to the head. I am debating between having a boss welded on or changing to the FI head. The FI head would definitely be easier as I am adding the fuel injection as well, but the port design changed and the older heads have better performance. Decisions. Alternatively, you could just not bolt the brace down at all as the bottom is secured pretty well, but I can't help but think Ford designed that brace for a reason.
Thanks, yes I do have the old 300... kinda. I have a 240 head on a 300 block. It's good for compression but might need opened up a little. Looks like I'm just going to find any FI 300 (4.9l) that I can and go nuts. Thanks again for the help I appreciate it.
