There is another bracket running at an angle supporting the back of the board...
When I first saw it I thought the same thing. I almost went with the power steps but I can't reach over the side of the bed (my lack of height) to unhitch my 5th wheel without a step or bucket to stand on.
I think it may have been a last minute option item as the additional length looks like it was just stubbed onto the original step...different covering material and not flowing thru with the chevrons and chrome...harder to see in the night too as you could just step off the end while reaching in the bed! I'm putting lights under the truck (to shine on the boards) just for this very reason.
