2004 F150 Reverse issues
Pulled into a parking spot, went to back out and no reverse. No loud bang like I've read when a band breaks, it just didn't work
When cold, it will back up at idle so it can't be slipping. Before it even gets warm if won't go into gear. The oil looks fine and doesn't smell burnt
I drained the pan and replaced the filter, now if I go about 3 blocks it will say "transmission malfunction" and put the truck in failsafe mode and the overdrive light is flashing. The only codes it gives me are 0715 (TSS) and the one saying it went into failsafe mode
I've done some tests
1. It has engine braking
2. The servo does not bottom out in the bore, which would indicate a broken band
I have the valve body out, was very careful when I took it apart because I knew there were some checkballs in there. Then I read they tend to wear because they are plastic, when I counted how many I had there were 7 and not 8. I'm 99.9% sure I didn't drop one
I'm wanting to put it back together and test again, are there any parts I might want to go ahead and replace while it's apart? Would the reverse servo cause a problem like this?
Because it has passed those test, and because the fluid doesn't look or smell bad I really don't think I have an internal transmission problem. Naturally if I talk to a mechanic they tell me to rebuild the transmission....if anyone could specifically tell me why then I would rebuild it but nobody has been able to yet.
Any ideas?
What Does P0715 Code Mean?
OBD-II Code P0715 is defined as a Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit MalfunctionThe purpose of the automatic transmission is to match the engine's optimum power and torque characteristics to the driver's desired rate of acceleration and speed by auto-selecting different gear ratios or 'speeds' to power the wheels.
Code P0715 is triggered when the transmission's Input Speed Sensor isn't providing a reliable or rational signal. This is a critical problem because with out this signal, the Transmission Contorl Module or TCM can't properly shift the vehicle from gear to gear as the vehicle needs to change speed and rates of acceleration.
P0715 Symptoms
- Check Engine Light will illuminate
- Vehicle will not shift properly
- Decrease in fuel economy
- In unusual cases, there are no adverse conditions noticed by the driver
- In some cases, there may be performance problems, such as dying when coming to a stop after driving on the freeway and/or misfire-like symptoms
Common Problems That Trigger the P0715 Code
- Defective Input/Turbine Speed Sensor
- Defective Shift Solenoids
- Defective Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
- Defective Valve Body
- Dirty transmission fluid that restricts the hydraulic passages
- I have had no hands on experience with this

Think ill order the shift solenoids and put them in and see what happens. If that doesn’t fix it I’ll pull the intake and put that other sensor in. I’ll be able to inspect wiring at that time too
