P0720 Engine Code

Hello,
The last few days I've started getting the Wrench Light on my dash panel upon starting the truck and trying to put it into gear. I first noticed this on a cold morning and got the wrench but the truck went into Reverse and once i got going I was only in 3rd gear. I started and stopped the engine a few times and finally got it going. Since then it seems to do it all the time whether hot or cold. Tonight i noticed that if i start the engine and just go directly into Drive I dont have the issue but if i ever go into Reverse it goes into limp mode and i get the big yellow wrench again. I only have engine Code P0720 which seems to refer to a speed sensor. Has anyone had any luck repairing with similar issues. I cant seem to find the sensor listed on the typical auto part websites.
Thanks,

Welcome to the forum, jsjustice007! It sounds like it's time for a visit to your local Ford Dealership. What's your truck's model year/mileage? I'd like to look into some options to help out with the wrench light as well.

Upon startup I can go straight into drive without issue but anytime I go into reverse I get the wrench and have to cycle the ignition to clear the wrench to get back into normal drive mode instead of 3rd gear only.
Never had transmission issues at all. No shift issues or slippage. Seems like it has to be a sensor sense it came out of nowhere.

Thanks for the quick reply, jsjustice007! Since this can be easily reproduced, you may want to take your tech on a test drive and replicate it for them. Be sure to come back and tell us how things go.

Could just pop in a VSS, look over the wiring and if it appears to be good than throw in that sensor. Doesn't sound like the transmission is grinding or slipping does it?
