I have a 2003 to 7.3 I can drive it for 20 miles with no problems and then out of the blue will start running rough not building power and shakes like it is not getting enough fuel or something like that but does not throw a code any possible ideas I have just had it to the mechanic and had a new injection drive module put on it the injectors are fairly new you can't figure it out.
Check your valve cover harnesses and gaskets for loose or chaffed wires. There are a million things it could be but that jumps out at me as a good thing to check first.
The IPR can do that when it gets warm, cool it with some water or air in a can when it acts up and see if it helps. Is the tinnerman nut on on the back of the IPR? And it could be your in-tank fuel pickup screens. Remove the hose from the back of the fuel pump and blow some air back into the tank to knock any debris off of the intake. Remove the fuel cap first.
Brookloving,
Have the in tank mods been done to your truck? If not try the clearing procedure Walleye listed.
How much fuel in the tank? If at a 1/4 tank this may indicate your pick up foot has fallen off.
Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? You can rig up a mechanical gauge to check it but you want to check it under a load not just sitting and idling.
Look at the large wire harness that goes across the driver side valve cover to the 42 pin connector. It can rub on the valve cover and short a wire. This can present as an intermittent fault.
When you say it throws no codes, how are you checking? The 7.3 engine is not OBDII compliant, (no matter what all the 96 and up code readers say). Does the check engine light come on? If it does, there is a code and your code reader (or the free scans from the auto parts stores) can't read it.
If no CEL, does it sound like someone taking a ball peen hammer to the inside of the engine block? If so, you've got a fuel restriction which won't trip a CEL or throw any codes.
The ball peen hammer sound comes as the engine is dying from no fuel. If your restriction isn't too bad, it will run smooth, just not have any power. Sounds like it's time to drop the fuel tank. As old as these trucks are, the rubber pick up foot has rotted in many of them and that can clog things up. A broken piece that gets into the pick up tube can act like a shut off valve that is open sometimes and closed sometimes, so if you drop the tank, look inside the tubes and make sure they are clear too.
Well guys I replaced pump fuel pressure was low so now I have 55lbs ran great at first then about 25 miles started running bad again, but not as bad as before so I change filter runs good but old filter wasn't dirty that I could tell. I have ordered a cam position sensor motorcraft, replace it as soon as it gets here.
