Having trouble with my transmission slipping out of first gear. Asking to see if anyone has suggestions on either rebuilding or swapping for transmission that will handle hauling better and possibly better gas mileage will a 5 speed fit? Is there something that will fit better for hauling? Or just rebuild and hope for the best? I have a 1997 4.0L automatic.
Current mileage is 141,500. Was told the transmission was rebuilt at 119,000 when I bought it. I was told however that the shop I bought it from has a bad reputation by a good friend of mine.
You might be able to find a manual Aerostar in a junk yard, but they're very rare.
It will also be hard to find a transmission that will fit behind the 4.0L engine that will survive the load of pushing around an Aerostar. It's harder yet to find one that will mate with a Dana TC-28 transfer case if you want to do this to an AWD Aerostar.
