I used to get volunteered to do everything. I helped everyone in my family move at least once. If I was home I was an automatic babysitter regardless of what my plans were for later. Everyone just took advantage of me (I'm too nice I guess) and sometimes I caught heck for not doing something I didn't know I was supposed to do in the first place!
Solution: strong-willed woman. She knows I will help my family (or hers) when they need it, and she encourages that, but she (politely) put an end to the random kid-dumping and frivolous errand-running. I'm free! (Moving helped too, you can bet I called everyone to help US out!)
Plus she would NEVER volunteer the tools, most of them are hers anyway.
If you can't get your G/F to see the light, get another G/F. Tools and time are way too valuable to risk losing.
From: I'm lost somewhere in NJ -- can someone please find me?!?!?!?
Dang it Bower, I keep reading posting after posting after posting where you brag on that wonderful wife of yours. And I just have one comment: Does she have a younger sister? Say around 26 years old?
Well I say you give the guy a chance if you don't know him. Make sure you are there and give him a hand. If everything works out when your girlfriend wants to hang out with her firend you will have a new buddy to shoot the breeze with instead of just sitting there.

thats me too
I catch heck like that too about every two weeks
I can relate to almost every post thus far. I can relate at the hint of someone needing to use my tools my blood pressure raises a bit and I automatically change the subject. One person can borrow my tools and it my younger brother as I have many of his tools and he has a few of mine, no problem they are the when needed.
I found a good excuse for when I don't wanna work on others vehicles. "I would but being as its your daily driver I would rather not do it in case something goes wrong" or "get someone else to do it". The first one is a little more polite. I couldn't agree more you help others move and it never fails when it comes time for you to move you ask around and no one can seem to find the time or get off work or blah blah blah. Oh well this thread is interesting in that it hits home. Later
I know all bout being Voluntold NAn...it happens to me alot...go military!!
Anywaysd...being that I am a young under paid airman...I do not have tools...not many....however, I do have a good-enough friend of mine that lets me borrow tehm (I bought a mustang from him also....) And he knows now that he never has to worry aobut not getting them back or me not repayin the favor. If I had tools...It depends on whi it is needs to use em..I have even lety a friend borrow my truck for a WEEK!! a full week...but i got the truck back washed in side and out, waxed, and a full tank of Shell gas...and the oil changed with the correct oil...
I would let a friend use my garage and tools, not a complete stranger. I do not let some neighbors borrow tools anymore. I got sick of having to go to their house three days after they were due back, so I could use them for work!
People that do not have tools and borrow yours, this is especially true in a garage/dealership setting, end up not returning them or worse, returning them destroyed. I had one person walk up to me and ask if he could borrow a "1/2" 1/4 drive socket. Him being the new guy I let him. Comes back a minute later asking if I had another one since that one broke. I went over and he was using an impact tool with an adapter on my 1/4 drive thin wall socket. I had to laugh, it was just so stupid.
If someone asks you why you can not do something for free or loan your tools for free just ask them the last time their dentist or doctor gave them a free operation and picked up the tab for supplies.
Maybe its a guy thing, but, I just would not feel right going to someone's house I did not know and borrowing their tools and garage for free. Maybe for at least a $100 and a case of beer.

(heck, I am getting old...)
Compliant & will do what she's told? I wanted a wife, not a maid.
I have 2 really good buddies. All thre of us are close. We'll help eachother out anytime anywhere and will buy parts for the other guy knowing that you'll get your money back soon. As for anyone else, go buy your own tools.
When I lived in a dorm at college people found out I had quite a few tools in my room. I had people I never met ask to barrow. When I said no the next question was if I could fix there car. (didn't help that I tore the front end of my truck apart in the parking lot one week and then everyone knew me, found out that was illegal too but thats another story).
Some guy I don't really know in MY garage using MY tools around MY toys and such. No way.
And no Dono, I won't tell her I'm lending her out. I happen to like this girl.
Hmmm. I don't mind them maybe borrowing some hand tools.(not any of my Ridgid power tools.) But the garage? That's like someone coming and sleeping in your bed. Just ain't right.
