changing from 4wd to awd
Mike D
1st concern: The AWD only comes in 2nd gen explorers, and then only in explorers with the 5.0 V8. The transmission is almost certainly not going to bolt up to your 4.0 OHV V6.
2nd concern: The AWD t-case needs the electronics (speed sensors, control module, etc.) to function properly. I'm not sure how much would be involved in adapting the older electronics of your '93 to the newer electronics for the AWD.
3rd concern: The AWD t-case is a different 4x4 system than the part time system you have. It doesn't come with a low range (something I would miss), nor is it "lockable" (ie 50:50 torque split) If you were to successfully swap in an AWD t-case, I would consider, at the least, putting manual hubs on the front and then you'll have to leave them locked all the time.
From what I've been able to gather, the only real "easy" replacement for the A4LD (other than another A4LD) is a C4 (C4's right isn't it?) The A4LD is built off of the C4, but the C4 is only a three speed transmission.
Good luck in getting that transmission fixed.
These trannys are a royal pain..if the truck was a 2wd, no prob..build up a c-4 and put a gear vendor overdrive behind it. It seems that the prob parts are the parts that were added to make it a 4 speed..hate band-aids, should have engineered a good idea at "JOB 1". Starting to get a little disillutioned with the Ford bunch.
Well thanks again for the help...Mike D
