Ceramic Coating

Another newby question for you. Apparently I’ve had my head in the sand for awhile. I’m just now hearing about ceramic coatings.

Is it worth it? All I can find are positives but seems like it’s all from the guys selling it. Is it really worth the money if it’s a garage Queen?

Ceramic coatings are great and I plan to do it once I get a Super Duty. There’s a lot out there and claims that ceramic coatings can do this and that. I’ve done a lot of research and even bought a ceramic coating kit already. I have the Gyeon Syncro kit as I plan to apply it myself and seems like a very user friendly product. What I know is that your vehicle’s paint must be in its best form before applying as the coating will lock any imperfections in for the life of the coating. Which means paint will have to go through a de-iron process, clay bar process, paint correction, remove any swirl marks, and then pre coated with a solution before applying the coating. This prep work is where the high cost in coatings happens.

So what does th coating do and doesn’t do, again from my research. It does not prevent scratches or dents. It does protect against small scratches such as swirl marks. It is an extreme water repellant and prevents hard water marks. It does act as a very durable wax where the shine of your paint is sealed in and protected from the elements. You still need to wash your truck, there are special soaps to use that are made for ceramic coatings. It does help protect the paint from UV light.

I plan on applying it because it does add an additional level of protection and prevents swirl marks. I plan on using my truck as a truck but anything I could do to protect the truck in my opinion is worth while. Especially at the price of these new trucks. Think of ceramic coating as a shield around your truck but understand it does not make it deep scratch and dent free as a lot of coatings claim.

A friend of mine who is very much into paint protection did exhaustive research on ceramic coatings and his conclusion was Gyeon was the best. He swears by it...dirt just washes right off...sometimes in the rain.

I'm sure this product is pretty new. My guess is it doesn't last as long as a Gyeon treatment but it might be worth investigating.

Check out this video on this product. Pretty cool.

I have been using ceramic coatings for a couple of years. YES they work...BUT the preparation must be done correctly or you are wasting your time and money.
1: Clay the surface, this removes most materials and contaminants from the paint. It doesn't matter how new the truck is, it's not really clean. Don't believe me... Wash it then dry it, place your hand inside a plastic sandwich bag and then slide your hand over the surface.... Tell me what you feel. Now do the clay bar treatment and do the same test, you will be amazed...

2: Use a polishing cleaner - This removes any wax, sealants, or other materials left over after the clay bar treatment.
3: Blow the surface off with air to remove any dust or chemical/polish residue that is left
4: Apply you final product as per the instructions.

There is a great website with tons of info and another great forum called Autogeek. It is at www.autogeek.com, it is all about detailing and people are really helpful, no attitude at all. I learned all I know from Autogeek and even took a free class at their South Florida headquarters.

I use a brand called Pinnacle, it has a life of 3 years when applied correctly and it is like glass. Water beads up and runs off like it is on oil. It also has a great UV protectant in it to save your paint.

I paid $1100 and it’s well worth it. 7 months so far and when it rains and drys by itself it looks like it’s been to a Detailer. I normally don’t have that kind of discretionary extra income but after hearing and researching I decided to do it. I especially wanted the protection it will afford from the Florida sun.Next. Make sure you get someone with a proven great reputation. The good ones treat your truck like it is theirs. He had my truck for 4 days.

Couple questions.

Should they do a clear bra before or after (painted front bumper).

Can they do the wheels?

Can't comment on the clear bra, I refuse to get one, just don't like the look.

Yes, they can do the wheel and barrels, makes a world of difference.

And despite what you may read, the ceramic coat, "in my opinion", does nothing to protect against chipping or scratches.

Save the money, get a nice detail job on your truck with a quality paint sealant, wax, and call it a day.

The painted bumper most definately will be getting a clear bra. By the time it fades I can just peel it off as the truck will be well used up.

Different methods for different people. I think people do this to save time by not having to spend all day detailing.

I completely disagree. I had my truck ceramic coated over a year ago. 3 windshields have been chipped and broken, with no signs of any pits or scratches in the hood. Last month a branch 6 foot long and 4 inches across fell on the hood. 9 dings and dents later, 2 on creases or bends, hood was totaled. The guys at the body shop asked what I had on the hood because there wasn't even the slightest scratch on it. Never noticed that. But, that tells me it works pretty well. my .02 cents.

As a testament to the shiny, I stared at this for more than a minute before I realized there was a chrome bug guard on it. That truck is gorgeous.
