Good point. While chains are usually illegal on most public roads, some places actually require them by law. You may notice signs that say "Chain law in effect". In that case you must have chains to be legal.

Thanks fellas.
We are in Tahoe from San Mateo.
I do have a set of cable chains that fit my BFG ATs. -just in case. On Hwy 50 & 80 normally 4wd with AT tires are allowed when snowing but at times they require chains as well.
Its only Fri afternoon before a storm, but there’s nobody up here and roads are clear. We plan on skiing Sat and drive home early Sunday. Suppsed to be a break between storms sun morning.

Love skiing at Tahoe and have friends in Napa & Fairfield. Donner Pass can be treacherous. If you have never driven in the snow, you should find yourself an open snow-covered parking lot and throw your truck around some, but ensure no snow-covered curbing ruins your day. Learning how your truck responds in slippery conditions away from other traffic can be invaluable ... and a lot of fun, too. It's akin to riding motorcycles ... all MC riders should start their riding experience in the dirt.

California native here and I've been living in Colorado for the last 17 years. I very rarely ever turn my 4wd on during the winter. Usually 2wd is more than enough. I had a 2wd F150 for a few years here in Colorado. Never got stuck driving with it in the winter. But if you get a foot or two of snowfall, then you'll probably want 4wd.

What a fun trip!
Went up Fri morning. No rain, snow or traffic.
It started snowing early sat am.
Skied and had 4” on truck after.
Snowed all night and we left Sun 8am.
After we got through the chain monitoring station, it was a nice drive. Single file, 25mph over the summit (7600’?), snowed the entire way, got lucky-no wind!
Picturesque scenery.
Side note- on icy Back roads I tried 2wd. Locked and unlocked. No way I could get going from a stop. No matter how easy I was on throtle....
4wd it was. Worked flawlessly.

Glad to read your trip went so well.

Life on Donner Summit can indeed be a challenge at times.

That snow is awesome, f350ktm. Love that pic. I love snow, driving in it, snowmobiling, plowing it, etc.

I don't ever lock my hubs. Just let the auto 4x4 engage them. 2WD is useless on a Super Duty unless *significant* weight is in the bed. Throwing a couple of 80lb sandbags isn't going to do much.

Agreed.
I tried leaving stop signs locked and unlocked and was as easy as I could be but lit them up each time.
I even tried using the brakes and let off brakes easy... Nope.
