22.5 x 6.75 rims

It's been pretty cold here. Right around -20 or so. Next week is supposed to be even worse. We have had way too many fires. Haven't been able to get out in the garage for a while.

Still having trouble finding rims for the 53 Ford F500. I did find one place (in California) that can make them and will ship across the country to NY. WOW! $$$$.

How safe is this idea? I have been able to find some 22.5 x 6.75 rims with 6 lugs and some with 10 lugs. Can I have the holes welded shut and then redrilled for 5 lugs on 8" pattern? (using a local certified welder, not me) Or, maybe have the entire center cut out and a new center welded on (don't know where I would find the blank centers though).

I know in the long run, I will probably have to break down and get the ones from California

There is also American Wheel in Kennewick, WA. It's where my wheels came from, but likely the freight would be about the same. There has to be wheel shops closer to you. I wouldn't even consider welding holes closed and re-drilling unless done by a wheel shop, and I'm not even sure if that's done. Conversely, if you can find some 20" widow-maker wheels the centers can be used to fit the 22.5 outer rim, and this is what the wheel shops do.

I'll have to look. I'm pretty sure I have 6 of the 20" widowmaker rims (at least that's what the tires were)

I just went out in the two feet of snow, unburied the old tires. Not sure of the size of widow maker rims I have but I do know for sure the tires are 7.00 x 20. Would that make the rims 20”?

If so, would the outside rim of the widow maker fit into the rim of the 6.75x22.5 to be welded nicely?

Based on your narrow 7.00-20” tires, and you being sure that the rims are widow makers, it’s most likely that the rims are the common 5.00” wide variety.

Editing my comment. Will come back shortly.

Okay, I’ve got my head on straight. Your widow maker 20s have their center discs riveted to the flat surface of the rim forward of the semi-drop center (unlike others that are riveted to the band that is the semi-drop center). That means your center discs are nearly 20” in diameter, minus the rim wall thickness. AWS will thus be able to weld your centers along the flat surface ledge of a 22.5” rim. This is called Ledge Welded. I don’t find a reference that gives an exact inside rim diameter where that weld would be made. This is where a conversation with Shaun at AWS would be needed. Stu
