Hi, I have a 1990 F250 XLT Lariat with a 302 V8 and 4 speed manual trans (W/ OD) and i bought it from my boss for $200 just because reverse didn't work. He lent it to a couple dumb kids and when they brought it back it didn't have reverse anymore. I took a look at it and in low range it will move on flat ground. If you let the clutch out too fast the car will grind and pop out. It is also very difficult to get it in reverse in the first place and overdrive, which is on the same side as the transmission. All forward gears besides OD work fine. Any feedback will help me out on finding the issue.
There is no 4 speed w/OD found in an F-250, and a T-18 doesn't have OD anyway. Are you sure it isn't a 5 speed, as in "five forward moving gears"? I'm guessing you have either a ZF or an M5OD.
Look at the rear wheels. If the axle sticks out about 4" past the wheel mounting surface, it's a full floating axle and a HD truck, which would have come with a ZF. If the wheel hub doesn't stick out, it's a LD truck and probably has the M5OD. Another way to distinguish between the LD and HD trucks is the GVWR and whether it's over 8500 lbs or not.
Or you could take a picture of the transmission and post it.
Easy place to start is pull the shifter and shifter boot. Then roll back the carpet from the firewall, then pull the tunnel cover and top plate of the trans. Look at the forks to see if the are worn or broken.
Being a 5.0 truck, I'll be willing to bet it's a M5OD trans. I dont believe the 5.0 came in trucks over the 6600 gvw rating, and anything over 6600 didnt have the Mazda trans.
Thank you for the feed back guys, i did research and the car is a 302 and a mazda 5 speed (M5OD-R2) and when i drove it around it does sift a little crunchy going from 1st to second but not anything else. I was also wodering where online I could find good shift forks or a whole rebuild kit for these.
