I just acquired a 2003 Expedition 2wd, 5.4 that I need to use to tow a trailer that has brakes. It currently only has a factory flat connector.
I would like to add a brake controller and 7 way connector. My question is what is the best, easiest, cost effective way to get this done. I can do it myself, I just need to know the best parts to buy.
Thanks!
How heavy is the trailer load going to be ? Doesn't sound like your Expy has the trailer tow package in it if it's missing the 7 pin outlet. Look at a HD tranny cooler and maybe a deep aluminum pan for the tranny to beef it up for towing.
Yes, first of all you need to identify what you have, whether or not it is the factory tow package with a 4 pin adapter or an add-on 4 pin. If it was originally equipped with a factory 7 pin, all the wiring is already there, you just need to get the correct end such as this: https://www.etrailer.com/Custom-Fit-...leid=200316713
If your vehicle already has the plug to fit into the back of that, then that is all you need.
If not, and someone has butchered the wiring to add a 4 pin, you will need to identify what is there and then proceed. If you can post good pictures of what is already there, it will be helpful in diagnosing what you need.
Once the wiring is sorted, you will need a trailer brake controller.
In my opinion, Tekonsha is the best choice for an aftermarket TBC.
From a Voyager to a P3, pick whichever one you want to pay for.
Thanks. Yes it has not been hacked on. Original owner was good in keeping it serviced and kept records. I'll take some pictures and try to post them.
Will the serial # indicate if it has a tow package? if not, how do I tell?
You can look up the VIN on ETIS to see if it was originally equipped with the tow package. Vehicle Lookup
Or you can send me your VIN # and I will look it up for you.
