I'n new to the forum but not to Broncos. I just purchased a 95 Bronco 5.8L Auto w/OD. When I start it, sometimes the speedomoter and odometer don't work. Then normally within a Min. the Airbag light and/or the Overdrive Light flashes then the speedo jumps and they both come on and work fine. Until then then, the overdrive light continues to flash and it shifts very late and hard. Any help would be much appreciated.
OK, since I'm registered now, i can search the threads. I see that this is a common problem that could be VSS or PSOM. I'll check the VSS first and if that doesn't fix it then I'll take a look at the PSOM. Probably look in the salvage yard first though. Any advice on the PSOM. I noticed another new thread for this same problem as well. Sorry to repeat something, but would rather do that then spend the $$$ on a dealership to have to try and figure it out. Seems most people on here haven't had too much luck with the ford dealers helping.
You just gotta find a Ford Truck dealer. Seriously, there is a Ford Dealer here in St. Louis and thats ALL they deal with are the trucks and well, Sterling trucks now as well. But these guys are the best. I have walked in and asked for a front passenger side auxilliary shock mount for a 92 Bronco and they had one sitting on the shelf. The best part.....they are a heavy truck service facility....open 24/7!
Anyhow, I would definitely check the VSS first...sometimes all they really need is a good cleaning. Boht the symptoms are characteristic of poor VSS signal.
OK, so I have to see what everyone thinks of this. In the ongoing struggle with my Speedo/Odometer problem, I found out something rather odd and kind of comical. My Speedo/Odometer wasn't working again and with all of my frustration I smacked the top of the dashboard right above it and it came on and started working. I had previously checked the connections and they seemed ok. So now if it doesn't come on when I start it, one good smack and it workd fine. Now to me that would indicate a loose connection or something going wrong with the PSOM. What do you think?
Also, thanks to everyone on the site. There is a ton of usefull info here.
My Van did the same thing. Dealer said it was the PSOM and wanted $400.oo for it and $200.oo to put it in. Went to the junkyard and got one for $50.oo and put it in myself. 90000 miles later it works fine. LOL Jerry
