I was able to find a ford factory origional 8 track player with the nicer wood panel to mount in. My question is I want to have the 8 track player just for looks. So I need to relocate the more modern head unit. Just looking for options of where people have done this? I did see the highliner headliners which do look nice as well.
In the general audio scene, I've seen some pretty nice fitting over the hump boxes that are covered in the same carpet as the floor and are contoured to the dash. Probably would lose the ash tray functionality. If you are geared towards that type of creativity I think finding some matching kick panels and/or other interior trim pieces and making one out of those would be neat and factory looking.
I did look in to one of those types of units but I would prefer a real head unit. I have looked in to the hump covers and they do look nice. I wouldn't be too concerned about losing the ash tray functionality as for me that isn't something I really use. My dad was the one concerned as he is the woodworker who could build one and didn't want to lose the center seat. But I guess it will come down to if that third seat matters for me.
If the ash tray isn't needed maybe your dad could make something that either hooks on to the ash tray or even remove the ash tray and attaches using the same holes. Then it would essentially hang from the dash. You would lose a little clearance between the dash and hump but only the height of your head unit. Admittedly I haven't looked close enough with that intent to see what all could be done there.
Regarding the highliner - I really like the idea of that and looked into it for my truck but surprisingly at the time I didn't see many good reviews on them. I think most are regarding the speaker quality (can swap to a better set) and speaker location. I am not an audiophile so my standards are pretty low and I could probably live with it.
We did consider that but admitted mounting something there would look out of place. The little bit lost clearance wise would not be a huge deal though. Once I am at my parents place where I keep the truck in a few days I will have to take a look at it.
The highliner I have seen some pretty decent reviews now, you're right its basically the speaker quality that is complained about. Only thing is before I did that I would need to find a set of A Pillar covers as the previous owner broke mine and just got rid of them so mine wouldn't hide the wires currently. I will have to look in to it as right now there is a pretty powerful stereo in the truck, the only thing I do not like is the subwoofer is pushing the seat forward too much and so I sit right in the steering wheel.
It would keep the entire area looking original, but of course comes with a cost, but is cheaper then upgrading to the highliner and adding new speakers and everything else.
Since the headliner would be out to install something like that anyways, it might help to put in some of those adhesive tar-like insulating pads on the roof underside. Seems like it would help redirect sound a reduce vibration. Maybe?

I thought you had an 8track player there that you wanted to keep?
I may be doing that soon anyways, as my current headliner has fallen. I found one from a 1989 F150 with the clip in visors so I think I will pick them up, dye everything the right color and then add the dynamat or something like it so that its more insulated in the cab.

I did but that was for keeping things looking original. That would be my last resort to keep things factory at least. First I will look in to how to keep everything with the 8 track.
So just what are you looking for in a new head unit?
I did not think the AM/FM factory unit I had in a 76 E350 with after market speakers sounded all that bad.
This van had no sound deadening and it only had 260 air (2 windows down & do 60 mph)

I am looking to put in a factory ford 8 track player I found. I do not want it to be operational, just there for originality looks. I was looking for another location to move the DIN new stereo deck.

No No I know you wanted a factory radio to fill the hole in the dash but to then get another radio to try and install some place else to do the same thing other than 8 track I just cant see why?
So what more are you looking for this newer head unit to do?
More out put for louder sound or leads out for an amp or something else?
How do you use the radios in what you drive now like FM only with out put thru an amp for louder sound or something else?
Dave ----
Sorry I misunderstood. The truck actually has a modern stereo in it, I just want to move it as I consistently use the bluetooth functions and the previous own has an amp to all the speakers and subwoofer. So I want to keep the features as I usually stream audio but also listen to FM and satellite radio.
