I have a chance to buy all the side mouldings off an 79 F100 (both sides) and the tailgate trim. Whats a reasonable price? Looks good except needs cleaning and polishing..
Which type of moulding is it? There are 3 possible types. The narrow upper body side mouldings are not reproduced, the other types are.
I buy it at swap meets for $5 for each door or fender piece, $5 for a pair of cab corners, $10-15 for the bed. Narrow upper & lower tailgate, $5 each, FORD lettered trim panel $10-15, big upper panel $15-20. I won't pay more than that unless it is NOS, or absolutely mint, which is just about impossible to find anymore. If any of it is dented, bent, has holes drilled in it, or is scratched, it is scrap.
There are guys at the swaps that want 5 to 10 times the price I'll pay for the trim, they have been hauling it around for 15 years. Every time I see it it is in worse condition from loading & unloading, & is getting close to worthless.
I'll resell it to local guys, maybe I can get double what I pay for it.
Including the tie down hooks and lower side moulding? I thought maybe those were different.
I know some people do the oven cleaner or drano trick to deandonize these, but has anyone priced out what it costs to get it all refinished professionally? One day I'm going to get my truck painted and I'm a little worried getting the trim redone is going to cost me more than the paint.
Tie down hooks are not, they are chromed die cast pot metal. Lower side molding is anodized aluminum.
I've tried the oven cleaner trick with poor results. Some spots it removes the anodize quickly, other spots it does not touch. When you hit it with more cleaner to remove the stubborn spots the cleaner eats in to the aluminum where the anodize was already removed, causing deep pits. This pretty much ruins the part.
I bought a lot of used pieces to get the nice stuff I used on my truck. It took a lot of searching, but I found what i wanted, no refinishing needed.
