2.72:1, sounds like a lot, but it didn't drive like that. Yes, I had it in 4 low, according to the "****" on the dash, It felt more like 1/2 that gear reduction although top speed was probably 30mph.
It kept wanting to go about 3-4 mph, when less than 1/2 of that would have been appropriate.
The next ? is whats your axle ratio?
What size tires do you run?
Maybe a dumb? ,were you sure the front hubs did actually lock ?????
It might not have actually gone into 4lo
We assume you were stopped and foot firmly pressing brake before you shifted into 4lo .
even though the light said it went in ,it might not have.chk it out on flat ground .
Me owning a 6 speed with granny low can crawl
at idle .up or down
Haven't owned an auto to try.

I had the oposite problem. I have a 6.0L CC with 3:73s. I had a yard of mulch in the bed and was trying to pull out a stump. The truck was on blacktop and wouldn't break the tires loose even in Lo Lock. The stump wouldn't budge and the truck just sat there. It was sad. I pulled out the Chevy 1 ton with 4:56s and lockers and snatched the stump out with all 4 tires smoking. It was a bad day for ford.
Did you have it in drive or first. When I first went from stick to auto, I forgot to shift into first for max compression braking. Drive will just let it run away.
I would try to go ahead and lock it in first. It also may the weight of the truck and the hill you were desending and the stock gearing couldn't hold it to 1-2mph and some brake was needed. Just a thought.
