I have a 59 F100 with a 223, 3 speed column shift. There is a 4 speed toploader transmission for sale in my area and I'd like to know if the swap would work?
What's all involved if possible?
There are a couple of issues in the change. Your 3 speed probably bolts to the bell with a "square" pattern. Early top loaders (the performance version) had those holes drilled as well as the "new" in '65 1/2 "butterfly" wider pattern. The second picture down shows the patterns on one of the transmissions:
Ford 4 speed top loader introduced in 1963 1/2 Galaxie/full sized Mercs and over the years was only installed in cars. It was never installed with I-6 engines, so I doubt it will work.
The extension housing has a flange that the transmission mount (steel/rubber insulator) bolts to, then it bolts to the rear engine support that some people call a cross member.
No 1961/64 trans in a truck mounts this way.
The other problem is the location of the shift lever, if installed in a truck, it will be under the seat.
