Emergency transmission went out
I've got a 1983 F-100 inline 6 3 speed floor shift.Tranny went out will a later model trans fit my motor.I've heard if the bell housing bolt pattern matches mine i can hook it up.What year trans can i put in there.Please Help

You can put another 3 speed, a 4 speed, or a later 5 speed. They have strong 3 speeds, weaker 4 speeds with a overdrive 4th, strong 4 speeds with a granny 1st, aluminum Mazda 5 speeds with a overdrive, and a large zf 5 speed.
Another 3 speed or one of the 4 speeds will bolt right to your bellhousing, and can be gotten from any Ford pickup, no matter what the engine, since you will keep your bellhousing.
If you want to swap in a 5 speed, they both have the bellhousing built onto the tranny, so you will have to get a tranny from a truck that had a 300, 302 or a 351w engines.
Some of the earlier 3 and 4 speeds may allow you to use your original driveshaft, but some may not and some of the 5 speeds may be a different length also. What I would do is look around for a truck with a bad engine, buy the whole thing, get the components you want out of it, and sell the rest.
