I am taking a wild guess, here, but based on what you stated:"Never tried it with the old one, as it did not have a battery in it, I hauled it home on a trailer. Old and new cables were exactly same length"
Perhaps the original [to you] was incorrect and too long? The cables are specific to the engine [6 or 8 cylinder].

If that is the case I would of think he ordered the cable for the motor he has in the truck and if so and the old & new cable are "exactly same length" he needs to dig deeper to find what is going on and why it does what it does.

I know they are specifoc to the engine. I ordered one for the 6 that my truck has. Old one was in bad shape,decided against using it. I looked at both the old, and new and were same length
