My first winter with the truck. I’ve noticed that when temps are below freezing, the engine is noticeably louder than when the engine is warm. After a few minutes it sounds normal. Was wondering if something in upper engine is being oil starved. Truck hasn’t had first oil change yet. Has anyone experienced this?
Normal. All diesel engines are louder when they're really cold. You should have heard my 2006 6.0 on a cold winter morning here in Colorado. It would wake the dead! lol
Pilot injection is not used until engine temp gets to ~60 F in my experience.
This. Pilot injection is what makes modern diesels so quiet, but, for reasons unknown to me, it's not used when the engine is really cold. Ford actually put out a marketing video many years ago where they ran a 6.7 and switched pilot injection on and off so you could hear the difference, but I wasn't able to find it.
