Pulled the MSD dizzy out of my 390 and now ready to put it back in, but in my haste, I forgot to mark the rotor position before I took it out. Bummer. From what I understand, I need to get #1 to TDC and point the rotor to #1 wire... How do I make sure the motor is at #1 TDC?
Thanks.
Pull the plug from #1 (front pass. side) and bump motor over. Either have someone turn key, or use remote starter hooked to soleniod. Put finger over spark plug hole. As you bump motor over, feel for big WHOOSH of air. Stop turning motor over. You need to look into cylinder and watch piston as it nears the top. You cant look and hold finger over hole, so you need to catch it early. Sometimes it take a couple revolutions to get it right. Anyhow as you catch piston near the top, watch TDC mark on damper and then bump it til it is right on timing marker. Now you are at TDC for #1. Install distributor with rotor pointing at the #1 wire. Find #1 wire on cap, look where it's at and point rotor to it, then install in motor. You may have to turn rotor forwards, or backwards of actual point to get it to fall into correct spot. It may take a couple tries to get it right. Not a big deal.
Thanks Larry! Sounds like something I can do... maybe . What about this oil pump driveshaft problem I keep reading about? I know it didn't come out with the distributor. Not sure if it was supposed to or not. I was real careful when lifting the dizzy, didn't hear anything drop... if it's still attached to the oil pump, should I be able to look down in there and see it?
