So I have a 76 F-250 2wd camper special. It has a super popular dana 61 with 3.07 gearing. The carrier bearings are completely destroyed and the gears aren't far behind. I am thinking of replacing this axle with a dana 60 or dana 70. Does anyone have suggestions on which year / model I should be looking for? I would like one that is as close to being compatible as possible. Thanks in advance.
Dana 60/61: The carrier bearings are the same as are the spider gears. There are two different types of axle (differential) gears, so they may be the same, may not be.
If you want to keep the 3.07 ratio, fix what you have. 60 wasn't available with 3.07 and finding a Dana 60 with a 3.54 "high speed" axle ratio will be difficult.
Dana 70's only installed in F350's, 1973/79 available ratios: 3.73 - 4.10 - 4.56 - 4.88.
Buying a used axle: It might not be any better than what you have now, could be worse.
