September 29 Flash

My dealer says there is a new flash that is to be available today, 9/29/03. He says it has been tested and corrects all problems on the 6.0 diesel. I've had the dead pedal problem a couple of times and last week the engine just died. It died while driving slowly down a dirt road. I stopped, put it in park, and started it right back up with no problems since. Hopefully my dealer is giving me good information. Anyone know any details about this new flash? I love my truck but worry that the problems I've had will continue to worsen.

If you've had ONE incident, I wouldn't suggest you get the reflash until you see that MOST reflash post are positive...

I had a GREAT running truck that had the dead pedal no more than once a month...
once I figured out it ALWAYS cleared after a restart, I would just throw it into neutral while on the straight, turn it off and restart immediately and it was fine...

Given that was the ONLY problem I had, I didn't want a reflash...
but the particular Dealer I brought it to for my first oil change thought they would help me out by doing a flash....

My power dropped 15% at least, my mileage went from 16 and 19 to 11-13 and 16 !!!
I've not had the dead pedal since then, but I'd rather have the pre-flash truck back...

Now that I have issues, I'll get the next flash and let you know...
Just got my truck back Friday morning from the dealer and there was no new flash available to THEM then...

Well, has anyone gotten the new flash. I had the August flash done to fix the rough idle problem but I still have the rough idle and still pretty crappy MPG (but still better than my old V10). I'd like to take the truck in, but would like to no if anyone else has had it done and what they think.

I was told by my service manager today that the re-flash will be out 10-6-03. At least it is only a week off now. Seems it has been two weeks out for the last 5 months.

Some people are reporting that they got the flash from a Ford rep who happened to be in the shop this past week, but the general release is still scheduled for Monday 10/6.

The word is that this flash will not solve the hard starting that sometimes occurs at high altitudes. People living in Colorado have reported this symptom. Ford apparently is still working on this and does not have it solved yet.

Cool! Everyone that gets this make sure you keep us informed! I haven't had any problems with my truck except for the low fuel milage thing. But what I wouldn't give to get that up a little higher and get a little more power out of her!

It was also reported that the newest flash did not fix the low power below 1800 rpm problem, but the person stated that he did not have a serious low power problem. He could not say if the flash would do any good for someone with a serious low power problem.

He did say that the flash fixed his rough/erratic idle and smoke on startup problems, and that his mpgs seemed to be getting better.

Remember, this is only 1 person reporting, and he only had 200 miles on the truck since reflash.

Had the Oct. 5 update installed today. So far so good. Rough idle at startup is gone through at least 9 starts. No more smoke at warm startup. Talked to head diesel mechanic and evidently, this new program deactivates the warm idle calibration program, which they think causes the rough idle and the excess smoke. I've also noticed the truck is a little more responsive, especially when going from a dead stop. No more lag in the pedal. Also, he told me that the increase in rpms from 650 to 900 after say 3-5 minutes of idling is supposed to happen. He said thats what the engineers said needs to happen if the engine idles for excessive periods. Again, his words from his talks with Ford.

My rig idles up after a few minutes. This is normal.. they make and aftermarkt idle control box to keep the trucks warm at colder temps like -30.. Where I work we keep the trucks running at 1300rpm when at idle it's the only way to keep the motor warm. And keep heat coming out of it.

resqdawq3,

They do, but when I first got my truck, it didn't do that, then had the flash that came out in late August/early Sept. and it started doing that. Since it started doing that after the 1st flash, I thought I had a new problem but was glad that at least one thing it was doing at idle was normal. Sorry if I caused any confusion

Well, I have had an opportunity to drive it several times now with the new reflash. Seems a lot better. Power seems better down low in rpm, no rough idle, and I havn't been able to detect any smoke at start-up, although this morning in the dark, sometimes hard to tell. Other starts were with a somewhat warm motor.

I have noticed that idle at startup is substantially higher than before flash. It then rapidly decreases to preflash idle speed. Not sure how good that is on a cold engine without full oil pressure. Another temporary fix?
