Angry Need help alternater

i put a new single wire 100 amp alt in my 71 f250 and it went on fine but I don't know what to do with the wires from old volt reg. Now my gauges aren't working right and I'm getting really confused! I have a red wire and a green one that is supposed to go to a dummy light but ? I guess I'm a dummy. Can anyone help me?

Which gauges are not working? Only the ammeter should be effected by the change, and your fuel, oil and temp gauges should still work fine as they're independent of that system as far as I know.
Is this a true 1-wire alternator? Or just a regular old internally regulated unit that still needs a couple of extra connections to work properly?

They are both internally regulated alternators, so either way your old external one is no longer needed.
For a regular one though, your old wiring may still come in handy. For a true 1-wire though, none of the old wires are needed any longer.
Since they're fairly safe in their protective plastic connector, you don't really need to do anything with them. But if you want to clean things up you remove them, cap the ends if you had to cut any off, and tuck them out of the way so they can never short out on anything.
The old Orange "field" wire is the only one that runs from the old regulator to the alternator, so that one can be cut out of the harness completely.

Have you checked to see if your new alternator is charging? With the engine running, the battery should read 14.5 volts approximately most of the time. It will fluctuate a bit here and there of course, but that's a good nominal reading.
If you don't have a hand-held voltmeter (they're cheap, like 5 bucks at Harbor Freight and others) you can buy one that plugs into your cigar lighter to monitor system voltage. That comes in very handy in fact. Of course there are permanent mount types too, as well as those you can replace your old charge gauge/ammeter with.

But for sure check the battery power if you have not already.

Good luck.

Sorry, forgot to ask more about the Red and the Green wires. Where are they and what color stripes do they have?
The old regulator had a Green w/red wire. Is that what you meant? Sounds like two separate wires and if so I'll have to check my diagrams (that I've found here on this site) to see if I can help with that.

Oh, and I also forgot to ask if your original setup uses gauges on the dash, or indicator lamps? Most of the trucks I work on have the full gauges with the ammeter we were talking about above. But if you have lights only, then there are some wiring differences.
So let us know what you have.

Thanks

Paul

Talking Alternater

Thanks Paul,
I actually did get it sorted out. I think I was just unsure due to the fact that I already had to re wire my entire dash because I switched out my dash luster panel and I ended up spending like 3 days figuring out the wires and I'm sure I changed plenty of things from the original. So now I just get nervous if I have to touch that stuff. I am pretty good at process of elimination stuff I always win but it takes me a while and sometimes I get so frustraited I just want to burn it down. But yes I did just cap both the wires and batterie is charging. I just needed to splice my elect. fuel pump wire to a different power and well I forgot whatelese I did but regardless, I win!

Just st want to thank you for taking the time it is really a big help being able to ask you guys about things when I get stuck. I very much appreciate your help.

Great to hear! Glad when we can help clear stuff up. Or just as often make things muddier, 'cause that can be fun too!

I know how long and frustrating some things can be. It's good to win those battles, even if it costs you some hair sometimes.
