4x4 sometimes works
I have an 03 f150 Lariat. 165,600. When driving with 4wheel engaged, it will sometimes come out of 4wheel and then go back in. It does it randomly. Sometimes it stays on all day, again; sometimes it comes and goes.

You might try posting the question in the 97-03 F150 forum. I have a 10 model, and I know I’ve read threads re: 4WD issues of this sort in that forum. With the 09 and up models, they have vacuum operated axle locks (probably the wrong term) that malfunction. I’m surprised someone didn’t chime in here to offer help.
