Saw a few drops of oil on the ground so crawled under and found the rear output shaft of the xfer case was leaking. Gear oil was slung in a line across the frame and underside of the body from the spinning shaft. The frame and rear axle were covered in dark spots from the flying oil. Dealer replaced the seal. I was reminded of my last F250. It was an 04 and the rear main started leaking a few weeks after I got the truck. The seal was replaced three times under warranty but it never stopped leaking for the 14 years I owned it. Hoping this new seal on my 18 F250 stops this leak and I don’t have another 14 years of oil on the driveway. Maybe I’m just cursed when it comes to seals!
06 F-250 6.0 Power stroke... 4x4 not working, transfer case engages and locks front drive shaft but I can still turn the front axles by hand at the hub... any ideas?
You should post this in the 1999-2016 forum, not 2017+ forum. But to answer your question, your hubs are not locking. Most likely the seals on the vacuum operated auto locking feature are shot and losing vacuum. You'll have to manually lock the hubs when you want 4WD. I did this for years with my 2006 F350.
I have the same transfer case/shaft seal leak. Getting it fixed on the 6th, only 9500 miles.
Hmmm..... hopefully just a few bad seals out there. Really looking forward to no oil spots in the garage and on the driveway. Kept cardboard under my old one for many years!
Same here for me. Has been back to dealer twice but since they don't technically see a drip they won't fix it, even though there is obvious sign of the fluid getting slung on the underside of the truck. Trying a different dealer and see if they will actually do something.
Even though mine was pretty obvious, the paperwork says they still added dye to isolate the source of the leak. Your dealer could do the same thing to see if anything pops under the UV. Surely that would prove that there is indeed a leak!
