engine swap question
I recently bought a 2003 F150 with a 2V 5.4L engine that was sold as "it runs a little rough". Price was low enough so I took a chance. Body was in good condition, but I had to hold the accelerator down to keep it running. Smokes like crazy, and has no power. Very long story short, I found that it has lost a cam roller on cylinder 4. Valve hit the piston, it is toast.
Started looking for a replacement engine, and junkyards around here think that they are gold. I was quoted $1000-$1800, and they had over 100k miles on them. I found one on an auction site nearby, and it was described as a "running takeout." No other additional information as to what year and make vehicle it came out of , or how many miles etc. I ended up buying it cheap. Brought it home and found out it is not quite the same.
Original engine was built at the Windsor plant in 10/02, and has the plastic intake manifold.
Potential replacement engine was built in 08/01, and has a much different cast aluminum intake manifold and was built in Romeo, Michigan engine plant. I have also noticed the exhaust manifolds are of a different design.
Here's my question: Can I install this engine as is, or can I swap the intake manifolds to use the original upper intake and throttle body/ EGR assemblies?
Thanks in advance.
Rick
I am no expert but what I have read is that all the 5.4s were built at Windsor and 4.6s were built at either Windsor (VIN 6) or Romeo (VIN W) and all the Romeos in trucks were 4.6. At least back then they were. Or so I have read. Take that for what it is worth from some random guy in the internet.
If it has 11 valve cover bolts it is for sure a Romeo 4.6.
Romeo flywheel is 6 bolts, Windsor is 8 bolts.
So several things like that are different.
As a general rule you don't want to swap parts from a Windsor to a Romeo or vice versa. Some parts just plain do not fit and others might fit and work, but you better really know what you are doing with mod engines before trying to mix parts like that.
The exhaust manifolds on a 5.4 look more like a boat's with a straight tube that gets thicker at the back end.
On a 4.6 the manifolds look "snakey", instead of being a straight tube it sort of "wiggles".
But it is possible someone mixed up the parts.
I'm thinking you got a 4.6 from the auction
or you got a 5.4 out of a van, which I know has a different intake but not sure about exhaust manifolds
if it is a van engine, you can just swap things over and it will be fine.
