Thinking on switching oil

Seeing what everyones thoughts are. Have a 15 F250, mainly it sits all week long as I drive my other car to and from work. Weekend truck, pulls boat in the summer and plows in the winter. Has 34,xxx on it now, since it was new Ive always ran factory Motorcraft 5-20 in it. Usually change it every 2-3k depending if it was snowing or not. More towards the 2k side but anyway my local Walmart has become very scare on selling the Motorcraft oil. Use to be around 15 for 5 quarts, now its not always in stock and almost 20 bucks. I can get Mobil 1 on sale for 24 25 bucks. Was wondering if its worth the switch, or should I just keep running Motorcraft since that's all its ever run.

Why in the world would you ever change the oil every 2k?!? That will not do any good for the motor at all. New oils will last way longer than that. I'd be more worried about the constant dry starts from a new filter with changes so often

Because manual says every 6 months or 7500 miles whichever is first. I am also a low mileage driver and will change mine every 6 months which is also 2-3k miles. I have a whopping 1235 miles on it through first 4 months of ownership. Just following what the manual recommends to keep my warranty in play. I suspect the OP is doing the same.

I can tell you from real world data that oil changes based on the calendar are a fools errand. Oil has no idea what it's birthday is, or how long it's been in the sump.

Generally, I'd recommend using a good conventional oil; no need for syns with this engine. 5w-30 is now back-spec'd for all the 6.2L engines. Change oil every 7.5k miles, or if you feel "itchy", every 5k miles. No more often than that.
Believe it or not, wear rates actually trend DOWN as you use the oil longer. I realize that will make your head explode, but the truth is hard to swallow at times.
Read this regarding wear rates: https://www.machinerylubrication.com...s-oil-analysis
And this SAE study done by Ford/Conoco: https://www.sae.org/publications/tec.../2007-01-4133/

I realize it's near heretical to suggest, but changing oil too frequently is nothing but a waste of money and does nothing to improve wear.
You would only need to use a syn if you intend to run really long OCIs, or operate where you see consistent cold start temps below -20F frequently.

I also realize that warranty is a big deal and following it will reduce your trepidation. That being the case, don't overspend; buy whatever spec'd fluid you can find on sale.

Go get some decent 5w-30 conventional lube and worry about something else.

P.S. just get a decent brand name filter like Wix of the Fram TG. No need for silly expensive stuff here either.

I change my oil and filter every 5k or 6 months. Mines a 2015 so I use the ford manual recommended 5w 20 Mobil one. Switching to full synthetic won’t hurt anything. Synthetic flows better at lower temperatures that’s why I use it. It cost me about 35 bucks for a ford filter and 7 quarts of mobile one at Walmart.

I get what you're trying to do, but do you also realize that (presuming you're filling in the big center hole) you are actually putting lube in AFTER the filter media, and any large particle that would be in the virgin lube (or fall in off your hands, etc) would go straight into the engine and the filter won't stop it?
This is a false sense of well-being, to fill the filter.
Some folks prefill the filter; others don't. But data shows that neither method is "better" than the other. Neither method makes for less wear. But one method (prefilling) does induce a higher sense of risk in not filtering lube).

There's actually a protective film barrier called the TCB (tribochemical barrier) on the parts that does not drain off. That is protecting your engine parts far more than prefilling a filter.
Buy and read SAE study 2007-01-4133; done by Ford and Conoco regarding the benefits of TCB and it's maturation and destruction cycles, relative to engine wear.

The reality is that even SuperTech dino 5w30 will be more than adequate and its under $13 for 5 quarts. Heck if you desire full synthetic, its $17.47

So when pouring 7 quarts of oil into the fill hole, I believe the same situation happens. I've noticed a knocking on mine a few seconds, as part of the first oil change. Because of your comment I will certainly try to at least use a small screen in the funnel.

Mobile 1 full syn rated for 15 k miles every 10k, 5w30. I do change the Pure 1 filter every 5 k but have been thinking of going to 10 k on that also. 57 k on this truck.

remember the 3,000 mile or 3 months were formatted..
when engines did not have oil filters.... and oil was crude that was just filtered...

so its BIG $$$$$$$$ for the places that keep preaching it..

today's engines are made with ultra fine grinding.. micro polishing on machined parts...
100 miles the rings, they are seated..
and everything else was ready to run at 1 mile.

but SHORT running and Short Running in the COLD is bad for oil.. moisture is bad.. and takes time to evaporate off...

I do the 10,000 miles or once a year.. and have for years... Synthetic Mobile One..

It's not going to hurt to switch oil brand as long as you stay with the same recommended weights. My F350 sits all week also and I change it every 3k or 6 mths. I will reach the time limit long before I hit the 3k. I enjoy getting under the truck and checking things out while doing PM work.

Yep. I use SuperTech full synthetic. I use 5k mile intervals so the math is easier.
