I got an appointment for my chains, tensioners and guides to be replaced in my 5.4 Triton because they make noise on cold start up. I've been quoted 1,500 with a 2 year warranty. My question is how good are the oil pumps in these trucks it has 250000 miles and has good oil pressure but my mechanic says it's hard to drop oil pan without dropping the front diff. So can you replace oil pump and pickup tube through the front timming cover? Or if no piece's of the plastic guides have falling in the oil pan and pickup tube is clear should I just leave it? Thank you!
what year is your truck ? When did it start making the noise ? What brand oil and filter do you use ? The motors prior to 2004 did not have much cam chain problems. Are you hearing piston slap ? How long does it last after startup ?
2000 5.4 and it don't sounds like piston slap it literally sounds like a chain hitting metal. After 2 seconds it's gone I'm pretty sure a tensioner isn't pumping up right away and alowing the chain to hit the guide for a second. 5w30 motercraft and a motercraft filter
I'm guessing you have to drop the front diff to remove the oil pan so I guess I'll just flush the oil pan and leave the oil pump alone
The problem you can run into is any debris in the pan from the guides breaking can clog the oil pump pickup screen at the bottom of the pan. If this happened the oil flow will be reduced and the engine can starve for oil.
No you cannot remove the oil pump from the front, you have to drop the oil pan.
I know this thread is a little old but for those who are interested in replacing the oil pump while the front cover is off:
I just put new chains and tensioners on my wife's 2002 with a 5.4 and I was able to replace the oil pump without removing the oil pan. The driver's side bolt that attaches the pickup tube to the pump housing is a little farther back than the passenger side making it a bit more tricky but it is doable with a flex head ratcheting wrench. 8MM or 5/16. I probably dropped the bolt 5 times into the pan before I got a flex head wrench but was able to retrieve it each time by using a telescopic magnet. It never went into the deep part of the pan. Melling makes a high volume oil pump which I used because her truck has 277K on it.

This was the only picture I saved. You can see a gap at the bottom where the front cover goes. That’s the gap you have to work thru. The oil pump goes around the crank shaft behind the lower timing chain gear.
