Well, here in FL we finally got some good rain Friday afternoon. I got in my truck to go somewhere and I had some papers and a folder on the back seat (it's a '98 F150 supercab 4x4 BTW). I glanced back at them and they were damp/a little wet. They weren't like dripping, but a bit wetter than just being damp. My ? is where did the water come from? My back seat was totally dry and no one had been in the truck while it was raining. The only thing I found were 3-4 little water drops (waiting to drip) on the inside upper trim around my window. I do have the sliding rear window. I just don't know if those little drops were what got it wet, and if so how did the water get in; or if it came from somewhere else. Not to mention how in the heck was the back seat, backrest and all, perfectly dry? I looked around pretty good both while it was wet and then Saturday when it was dry and I didn't see anywhere water could get in. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Tommy
This topic came up a long time ago, a search may pull up the thread. I think somebody said that there is a TSB for a defective rear window gasket, and that there is a repair kit available.
The ole rear slider water leak.I bought my 97 used from a Ford dealer.Next day it rained and there was the leak, upper passenger side corner.Ford had to have a new rear slider put in due to the one the guy was trying to remove it cracked the frame. If the frame dont crack all they do is clean the window area and slider and install a new seal and reinstall the slider. But if it cracks you gotta get a new slider.
Yes. my 99 F150 has the same prob. ext cab sliding rear window, but the water in comming in from the seal between the window trim and the cab itself on the drivers side. Does this kit fix that and where do you get it?
i had my rear window doing the same, but i do not have the slider.they came to my house to fix the problem and it was the rear window seal.the guy said the seals that they use are garbage and when he pulled the window out the seal fell in the bed of the truck??????? mine was leakin at the top of the rear window and was dripping on the interiorand running all the way across from drivers to passengers side. the interior is fine and the problem is fixed......if i can help just let me know.............jason
Well, I had the truck parked on a slight incline, and the truck sort of angles down towards the front anyways, so I think maybe b/c of the combined angles it was lettin a little bit of water in. It has rained several days after this happened, and I have washed it once a week with no problems, so I am gonna wait and see if it does it again, and if it does then I'm gonna go see how much it is to fix. Maybe I'll ask tomorrow when I am at Ford, I am gonna go buy a Ford Radio Removal Tool b/c I want to put in my CD player I kept from my Jeep, but I need that tool.
984x4F150,save your money on that radio removal tool.Just cut two sections of clothes hangers, bend them in a "U" shape the distance across of the holes and theres your tool!
The money you save buying the tool you can send it to me!
I use 4 small screw drivers to unlock the Ford radios. It works, just takes a little patience. On the other hand, I don't think the tools are that expensive.
hey man, if you take it to the dealer all they do is call an outside company to come and fix it and they add $$$$$ to the bill.as of yet when i called ford there was no recall even though there are many trucks with this problem.my buddy got a 01 ranger and it leaked the first storm(all damn summer)they company that fixed mine gave me two options.fix the seal with no guarantee that it wont leak,or they could replace the entire window and can guarantee me that the leak will be fixed.........so i went with the guarantee.....the price was $380 but the leak is fixed and it only took them about 20 minutes to fix the window and as an added bonus they came to my house!!!!!!!.......good luck...... ampimper02 is my aol s.n
The tool is $23, so I may buy one or I may try the clothes hanger thing. I'd rather buy the tool, but I could use that $23 to buy the install kit and/or wiring harness. I doubt the Ford's wiring will match my Jeeps. Thanks for the advice/info.
This rear window issue was pretty well known by the glass company that replaced mine. I was lucky enough to find the leak from a small crack in the frame of the window just three weeks after purchasing my truck (used). It took a little talking, but I was able to convince my dealer to go halves with me on replacing the rear window. The new windows (like in the 99s) do not have the plastic frame. Its a completely different design. This should have been a recall IMO. But it just didnt happen.
I agree with lxman this time. I have used both the tool and the clothes hanger method. Save your self the headaches and front the 5 bucks or so for the tool.
