Just bought an '85 Eddie Bauer (with the 351) that had been sitting for about a year. Replaced battery and starter, but was getting a kinda nasty whining noise when it cranked over. Finally got it to fire up properly only to get a 'clunk' and a dead stop.
Crankshaft bolt will turn about ~15 degrees either direction still, so I popped off the valve covers to see if anything stood out as bound or broken and found that the #2 exhaust pushrod was just missing, as in not there. pulled off the rocker arm and noted a little bit of wispy smoke coming from the pushrod hole in the head, fished around with a magnet though and didn't feel or come up with anything.
I'm unfamiliar with the 351 generally, is it likely that the broken pushrod ended up in the pan? Or is it likely to be resting in a galley somewhere? Going to pull the intake manifold this week, and obviously the pan too just to make sure. Is this a common issue? Anything make sense as to what might have cause the pushrod to snap? Valve spring isn't binding and the keepers and seals look good still. Pretty wild to get 5 seconds of running only to end up here.
Welcome to FTE. Pushrod is probably in the valley. If the valve was hanging up it would allow enough clearance to drop the pushrod. Once you are clear of the broken bits you might consider a compression test before you go further.
the only place the p rod can go is into the lifter galley. i doubt if it made it to the pan. engine wont turn but a little each way SOUNDS like a major breakage that caused the p rod to come loose. I have never seen a pRod disappear into an engine, I seen bent pRods Broken Valve Springs & Stuck valves crashing pistons and locking an engine. Surly you have MAJOR engine Failure. Dissasembly is the only way the find the cause.
May you do well & Good luck
