I have a 292 that would start but ran very rough. I did a compression check and cylinders were running from 125 to 135 lbs until I got to the back cylinder on the passenger side. It came up 0.
I pulled the valve cover and found a dropped push rod on the second valve from the rear of the block.
What damage has been done and what will I have to do to repair this?
Pull the intake manifold and the valley cover. It's laying in the valley. Get a few replacements and loosen up the rocker shaft Loosen it enough to slide in a new one. Give the rocker shaft a good looking over. Make sure it pivots smoothly. Also check the lifter to make sure it goes up and down ok. Put the new one in and adjust to the proper specs for clearance. I don't know the spec, but I'm sure someone will post it.
Thanks for the reply. I have a few questions about the repair.
If the lifter appears to be OK can it be reused or does it have to be replaced?
If the push rod isn't bent, can it also be reused?
The engine has 50,000 original miles but was burning a lot of oil, I was going to replace the valve seals. Do I probably have a more serious problem?
Can you tell me why I had no compression? Is it because the intake valve did not open?
Chances are the lifter is ok. You can't get it out thru the valley as they come out thru the lower part of the motor. It definitely bend, otherwise you'd see it partially sticking up thru it's hole. That truck sounds like it sat or was used infrequently. The valve seals are dried out or even broken up and gone. It sounds like you have decent compression in the rest of the cyls. yes, the intake was closed off, so it wouldn't draw anything to compress. The exhaust would open, but it was at the wrong time to make compression. THis is a solid lifter engine, so the lifter probably is ok. Put a p/rod in and set the clod lash on it and start it up. Let it run for a while and get it warm. Shut it off and recheck the lash for the warm setting. You should be ok.
While your at it lay a steel ruler across the vavle spring retainer tops. If you find the missing push rod retainer is lower then the rest you likely have a bent valve.
