Ive been doing it about 20 years, and ive developed a method. Clean with gas, rinse/blow out with brake cleaner, use the hand paml method. Clean the spindle and hub as much as possible, check bearings/races etc obviously. Apply decent amount of grease inside the hub behind the bearings, lube seal and install. Tighten nut while turning, (tightness depending on vehicle) Back off 1/8-1/4 turn and finger tighten nut. check play after first drive.
Seems to be alot of variables in mathods outlined in manuals etc, doing my 89 yesterday afternoon got me to thinking. How do you guys re-pack yours?
i did my 1980 bronco a while back
i also put new axles on my boat trailer
the way i do em is tighten the nut until the very last infitesimal amount of axial movement is taken up. then go for a test drive and feel em.
