Ok dumb question- Do I have a cabin air filter on my 2004 5.4L Eddie Bower expedition? It has rear heat/AC and all that. I've had it for 5 years and I have never changed it. But I cant find where it is- I pulled the glove box out and looked behind there. There is a box there but i cant tell where a filter would go in it. Its not in the manual or my Haynes manual. Does any body have any pictures of where it is/replacing it?
I think the 03 and 04 had a similar AC to the first gen, which had the option of retrofitting a cabin filter. They removed this possibility in the 05 and up, for reasons unknown. I've always thought the lack of cabin filter in these trucks is a major oversight by Ford.

Just my 2-cents because I don't know the real answer, but I think it was removed for health reasons. Imagine if the filter got damp and mold started growing. Now all of the cabin air gets pulled through it and send back out for everyone to breath.
Yeah, if the owner never replaces it that could become a problem. But a good air intake design should prevent water and rain from reaching the filter. And not having one just means all the dust and crud will build up on the evaporator instead, which is a bigger problem as it's hard to clean and frequently wet during use, making it a perfect place for molds to grow. That's why you sometimes have mildew smell from the AC in older vehicles. A filter would prevent that, plus stop other things like pollen and what not from entering the vehicle. I think it's only Tesla which got this right, where they actually have a HEPA filter which cleans the air very well before it enters the car. Maybe a little over the top, but it's really nice if you have pollen allergies or live in dusty areas.

I don't think it's over the top if it's a health benefit. It sure would be nice if manufacturers were more interested in sharing technologies instead of hoarding them.
