First Thread. Small tick. Passenger side.

hi all.
This is my first post here and for that matter on any forum looking for help.
I’m not the best mechanic but I can get the job done with help. Lol. I got a 05 f150 XLT 5.4. Yep the ole 5.4. It has about 170,000 miles. It has a small tick from passenger side. It seems to becoming from the back side like near cyclinder 4 . I’ve read about the dreaded Cam phasers , timing etc. it almost sounds like a broke spark but a buddy of mine just put plugs in it. Which I know don’t mean nothing,
none of the plugs broke when the where taken out !
Amen. We put back the sp546 plugs. I heard about the manifolds failing a lot on that side. But I inspected it but it looks good. If it’s failed how can u tell?
Which I do remember plug 4 tip was worn pretty bad when we changed the plugs.
The tip was about gone. I checked the injectors by feeling of them. Don’t know if that’s a good test or not but I could feel each one. i guess there workin
So that leaves me here asking u fine members.
If it was ur truck where would u start.

Get a mechanic stethoscope. Only a few bucks and really helps locate a noisy problem...

Usually, the exhaust manifold will crack at the rear flanges, or in the "web" near the collector. These are usually hairline cracks and can be hard to see/tell, especially if the manifold has a lot of rust. Small cracks generally seal up as the manifolds heats up and the metal expands. If that's the case you'll only hear the tick while the motor is cold. Could also be a leak at the gasket, although that is not as common. The burned up plug on that cylinder definitely points to the trouble spot. Could still be a leaking manifold, but it'd have to be a helluva leak to cause the plug to burn up. Maybe a bad COP putting out too much voltage? I'd try swapping the COP to a cylinder on the other side of the motor and see if the sound follows it.

So did your buddy also replace the spark plug boots when he changed your sparkplugs?

You maybe hearing a high voltage from the coil leaking out an old spark plug boot.
That can sound like a tick.

Do the easy stuff first

Mine developed a tick, small at first, went away as the truck heated up,
As time moved on the tick got louder and didn't go away, plus I could smell exhaust gases in the cab.
Badly cracked manifold was replaced.

Tip on plug replacement; did that at 100K, by a dealer, smell of raw fuel in cab when stopped, turned out to be a poorly torqued plug. Only way to get enough purchase on the plug with the wrench was to loosen the ECU module and pull it gently out of the way, not unplugging anything.

i had the tick, but on the drivers side...just retorqued plugs last night and the second plug from the back was loose..got about 4 turns on the ratchet on it...i had a horrible raw fuel smell also..... these motors have noisy injectors at times so dont confuse that with something else
