So the bottom bolt head snapped off about 6 months ago on my door check leaving the screw inside. Last night the actual plate broke off from under the top bolt I suppose from over tightening it to compensate for only having one bolt holding it on.
I’ve already order a new part and know how to replace the check but my question is how do I remove the broken off piece of the bolt from the door? Any tips or advice? I’m know it’s probably going to have to be drilled out but was hoping if I removed the door panel I could find a simpler solution. Lol.
Anyone dealt with this before? I’ve searched the threads but couldn’t really find anything. Thanks in advance. I attached of pic of what I’m dealing with on the bottom bolt.
Try one of those left or backwards "drill / extractor" in a reversing drill,.
Reverse drill bits can work. I found that they are best applied with a hammer drill or impact gun. More than 1 type on the market. I've got several of them, and usually one of them will work, if the first one I try does not work. Lubricant really helps. WD40, Liquid Wrench, et cetera. Sometimes it takes a little patience. Sometimes you have to use a smaller drill bit, drill into the bolt a little, then insert your reverse bit.
On the broken off screw, first make a dent with a center punch. Then drill with a very small drill bit. This helps keep your work in the center and not veering off into the softer metal surrounding the screw.
Afterward, when you have the right screw, use Loctite Form-A-Thread to repair the damage. Then you can use the same screw in top and bottom holes.
