I am working on a 1995 Bronco XLT. It makes a loud whining noise seeming to come from the rear in 2wd. So far, I have dropped the t-case(which is perfect on the inside), checked all driveshaft U-joints(replaced fronts), completely tore apart rear axle(including the pumpkin, which was smooth as silk, the axleshafts which were fine, replaced wheel bearings and seals, and re-adjusted the brakes), and made sure the diff was full of fluid. After all this, it still made the noise . Can anyone tell me what is wrong? I am getting tired of wrenching on this thing.
does your 95 have a ls in the rear. if so you need to add a special tube of stuff that allows for the ls to work properly. if you didnt then you need to drain it and readd everything.
have you checkd your tranny fluid, when was the last time it was serviced. may just need a new filter and fluid.
I know the tires are fine. The noise is still made on dirt roads. The trans shifts fine and the noise seems to come from the rear end. Also, what do you mean by "does your 95 have a ls in the rear"?
if your rig does have it then you must get a special gear lube its like 8 bucks and its the size of a tube of toothpaste. that along with your normal gear oil to fill it up.
The Ford 8.8 rear axle has a tendency to whine. Mine has just started doing this recently, and the fluid and rear end look great. I don't know exactly what the cause is, but I now have 152K on mine with no problems, other than whining. I found that if I remove the seat, it is much more noticeable. I refilled the diff with synthetic lube, and that didn't help one bit.
Mine has 213K and it has been whining for the last 70k. Everything checks out...just nature of the beast possibly. But you could always just get the rear end replaced and not worry about it..Expensive but one way of getting rid of the whine....(either that or tell your other half to be quiet while you are driving.. Sorry couldnt resist.)
I was just gonna say...if she's whining at you take her on a vacation! At least go buy a half pound of cheddar and have a party!
Seiously, in all your checking, replacing and adjusting, have you checked the pinion bearing(s) ans seal(s)? The gears in the diff may be fine but if the pinion bearings are dying, she's still gonna whine.
I would bet that it's the pinion and gears whining together. SOmetimes when rear ends become worn, as in gears, they make a grove, so when u drivem they have a little whin to them. Nothing bad. Since u changed everything else in the rear, thats prob what it is.
There is absolutly nothing in there to whine. It has been torn apart. Everything torn to little bits. It is all basically new in there. That is why I am confused. Also, it is not a quiet whine. The slower you are moving, the louder it is. Basically, if I am going 20 mph, it almost drowns out the engine. The engine isn't exactly loud, but saying it was quiet would be wrong.
Try putting your truck up on jacks and running it in gear...but be careful. Noises will fool you sometime, and it may be that it's not coming from the rear-end at all. Sounds like it could be the tranny.
