1965 F100, T18 floor shift, 1968 Mustang 302, flywheel C5AE-6380-E , I believe is off a 70 Torino?
In the process of replacing clutch component on the 65 with 4 speed (T18) and I found 2 of the 6 flywheel retaining threads that secure the pressure plate to the flywheel are stripped.
Appears I may have a couple of options:
1) replace the flywheel; if available?
2) Take flywheel to reputable shop and have heli-coil installed on the effected 2 thread? Not familiar with 'helicoil' process but would seem that with a torque value of 18-24 this may be a viable option?
I personally wouldn’t want a helicoil (no less two) “buried” that deep in the mechanics. Possibly welding-drill-tap is a possible alternative if you can’t find a new flywheel.
Just drill them and use a helicoil coil. As long as you use numbered and not fractional drill bits you will be fine and it should be installed below the top surface with red lock tight. I also suggest the edge be penned to prevent back out. That's how I have always done them with no issues.
Faced with dilemma, cost of purchasing tools to make repairs, and/or whether I have the experience to accomplish either drill new threads or heli-coil, imagine it would also require drilling the holes in the pressure plate. I did come across a possible used replacement at a reasonable price, the items has the same part number but I am not clear if there are features I need to confirm before deciding since seller does not accept returns.
Thank U's all, appreciate the comments and suggestions
Took the flywheel to machine shop today and had them install the 2 Heli-coils. Apparently my backyard mechanic attempt to tap the 2 threads while the flywheel was installed presented a problem in that I tapped them off center. The shop corrected for my stupidity by cleaning up the 2 effected thread, taped all 6 threads, and surfaced the flywheel at a reasonable price. Now a matter of waiting for a break in the rain for my 3rd attempt at installing the trans.
Appreciates U'alls comments and suggestions, I thank you!!
