Tennis anyone??
I have an externally mounted quick connect on my tow truck and I've found the best way to keep it clean is to take a tennis ball and with a box cutter or other sharp knife, make a horizontal cut the width of the blade, (that's why i use a razor, 1" is about perfect) then make a vertical cut intersecting the first one, basically making a "plus sign" with the cuts. Push it over the quick connect, give it a twist or two and you're set. Cheap and easy and it'll last for quite a while.

Honestly the only way to truly protect it to mount it inside out of the elements. Some of the solutions mentioned will delay corrosion, but in the rust belt with high humidity they are going to get bad. On my Jeep the fittings are inside each from door. On my excursion they are mounted inside the rear HVAC compartment
