Latest find while one F1 is in hibernation and the other is still in jail..1939 Buick opera coupe, supposedly sitting since the 1980s and mostly apart. Car is filled with parts and so was the bed of my pickup, I think it is mostly there other than the engine. Undecided whether to go gasser or street rod with it. Anyone else into old Buicks besides Bob? I know he has at least one 1937 left.
Thanks, I think all coupes are cool, but rarely do I find one I can afford.
I lucked out with this one John, really a solid car. Usual spots like the rear lower tail pan and the front lower cowl need some attention but nothing compared to what I normally find up here in the northeast. Will take awhile to inventory all the parts then will snap it together with a few bolts to see what is missing. I like old buicks and cadillacs, here is a 38 Buick I picked up a few months ago. Was a car rented out for movies and then it sat neglected.
Yep, straight 8, but the picture makes it look bigger than it really is. I think the wheelbase is 122" and there is not much overhang on either end. Like other cars of the era it is very narrow inside, you can reach over and turn the passenger side window crank easily from the drivers side. I dont think there was fast food in the 1930s and people must have been much smaller!
Body is in the correct position, but the rear axle is just bolted in enough to roll, lower control arms are not connected to the frame so the rear can move around. The car has a truck arm style rear suspension, all the rage now but was stock in as far back as 1938. If I street rod it I will use a jag IFS and a modern rear on the factory truck arms.

Dave, My 30 year older Buick. I guess that the front axle is a gasser style. A lot changed in those 30 years!

That is awesome, isnt is amazing how much has changed in those years? I wish I had had more time to talk to my grandfather about what it was like to grow up and see all the huge changes and improvements that happened during his lifetime. Ever wonder who bought your Buick new and what it must have been like to drive it back then?
